The Mary Jane Girls are an American R&B quartet that rose to prominence during the 1980s. They were proteges of singer/songwriter/producer Rick James. The group’s lineup initially consisted of Joanne “JoJo McDuffie, Candice “Candy” Gant, Kimberly “Maxi” Wuletich and Cheryl Bailey who used the stage name Cheri Wells. The group served as background vocalists for James during concerts. The group used the name The Mary Jane Girls as a subgroup of James’ backing band The Stone City Band. They released their self-titled debut album in 1983. The album contained the singles “Candy Man”, “Boys” and “All Night Long.” The Mary Jane Girls were backed by The Stone City Band during live performances. Bailey left the group before their second album was completed and was replaced by Yvette “Corvette” Marine. Their second album, “Only Four You”, was released in 1985. The album’s first single, “In My House”, was the group’s biggest hit, reaching No. 3 on the R&B charts and later crossing over to the Billboard Hot 100, where it reached No. 7 and spent twelve weeks in the Top 40. A third album, titled “Conversation”, was shelved for decades before being released in 2014 as a retrospective of James’ work. However, a remake of the Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons hit “Walk Like A Man” was released as a single and was heared in the film “A Fine Mess.” It reached No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100.
