Cheryl Lynn, born Lynda Cheryl Smith, is an American singer/songwriter. She is remembered for such hits as “Got To Be Real”, “Starlove” and “Encore.” Smith began her singing career in the church choir. Her professionally singing career began when she accepted a job as background vocalist for the national touring company of the musical The Wiz. She eventually obtained the role of Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West, during a six month national tour. Prior to that, Smith appeared on an episde of the talent show The Gong Show. She scored a perfect 30 by performing the Joe Cocker hit “You Are So Beautiful”. Following the airing of the episode, record executives began contacting her. Smith signed with Columbia Records and released her self-titled debut album, which featured her best known single, “Got To Be Real.” The song reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Rhythm & Blues chart. Smith’s sophomore effort, “In Love”, featured the singles “I’ve Got Just What You Need” and “Keep It Hot.” Smith also performed the female backing vocals on the Toto hit “Georgy Porgie.” Smith has released the albums “Cheryl Lynn” (1978), “In Love” (1979), “In The Night” (1981), “Instant Love” (1982), “Preppie” (1983), “It’s Gonna Be Right” (1985), “Start Over” (1987), “Whatever It Takes” (1989) and “Good Time” (1995).
