Fans, family and friends are mourning the loss of rapper Nipsey Hustle. According to reports, the West Coast artist was shot outside his Marathon Clothing Store yesterday afternoon. He was 33 years old. Two others were shot before the suspect fled, according to an LAPD source. Although law enforcement officials couldn’t release names, they did confirm that the two other victims are in stable condition. Tributes to the slain rapper have poured in from fellow artists and his record label. The rapper, born Ermias Ashedom, opened his Los Angeles store in 2017. He released his criticially acclaimed, Grammy nominated debut album, “Victory Lap”, in 2018. He performed at Warner Music Group’s Grammy party in downtown Los Angeles in February 2019, with WMG owner Len Blavatnik among partygoers close to the stage. “Victory Lap” peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. He also appeared on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart three times, with “Crenshaw” (No. 61, 2013), “Mail Box Money” (No. 18, 2015) and “Victory Lap” (No. 3, 2018). His songs, including his collaboration with Lloyd, “Feeling Myself”, generated 832 million streams. Ashedom’s death is a devastating lost for hip hop and the community. People of color are better and must do better. The sensely violence in our community has to stop. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
