Charles Ray Wiggins, known professionally as Raphael Saadiq, is an American singer/songwriter/producer/musician from Oakland, CA. He began singing with a local gospel group at age nine. At age 12, he joined the gospel group The Gospel Hummingbirds. In 1984, he auditioned to join singer/songwriter/musician Sheila E’s backing band for Prince’s Parade Tour. Shortly after returning to Oakland from touring with Prince, he became the bassist/lead vocalist for the band Tony! Toni! Tone!. Tony! Toni! Tone! went on to chart with such hits as “Born Not To Know”, “Little Walter”, “The Blues” and “Feels Good.” The group disbanded in 1997.  In 1995, Saadiq had a huge solo hit with “Ask Of You”, taken from the Higher Learning soundtrack. In 1999, Saadiq formed the group Lucy Pearl with singer Dawn Robinson of Envogue and Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest. Lucy Pearl recorded one album. Saadiq has released the albums “Instant Vintage” (2002), “Ray Ray” (2004), “The Way I See It” (2008), “Stone Rolling” (2011) and “Jimmy Lee” (2019).
