Angela Laverne Brown, known professionally as Angie Stone, is an American singer/songwriter/actress/producer. She rose to prominence as a member of the female rap group The Sequence, which became the second group signed to Sugarhill Records. The Sequence scored a hit with the single “Funk You Up”, which reached No. 15 on the US Top Black Singles chart. The group had  other hits during the early years of hip hop, including “Monster Jam”, featuring Spoonie Gee and “Funky Sound (Tear The Roof Off)”, which kept them touring. The group disbanded in 1985. Shortly thereafter, Stone went on to work with the group Mantronix before becoming the lead vocalist for the group Vertical Hold. In the late 1990s, Stone was signed to Arista Records. In December 1999, Stone released her debut album “Black Diamond.” In 2000, Stone transitioned from Arista to Clive Davis’ J Records. That same year, Stone recorded the theme song for the UPN sitcom “Girlfriends.” On October 16, 2001, Stone released her sophomore effort “Mahogany Soul.” She has also released the albums “Stone Love” (2004), “The Art Of Love & War” (2007), “Unexpected” (2009), “Rich Girl” (2012) and “Dream” (2015).
