Surface is an American R&B group from New Jersey.  Formed in 1983, the band’s original lineup consisted of musicians David Townsend, David Conley and Everett Collins along with vocalist Karen Copeland. This lineup recorded the singles “Falling In Love”, “When Your Ex Wants You Back” and “Stop Holding Back.” “Stop Holding Back” was released in 1999 when Salsoul Records opened their vaults as part of a special vinyl release along with the other two early Surface recordings. “Falling In Love” reached #84 on the U.S. Billboard R&B Singles chart and #67 on the UK Singles Chart. A year later, “When Your Ex Wants You Back” reached #84 on the U.S. R&B Singles chart and peaked at #52 on the UK Singles chart. In 1984, Karen Copeland left the group. She was replaced by Bernard Jackson. In 1987, Surface released their self-titled debut album. The album’s first single, “Happy”, reached #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Singles & Tracks chart. A second single, “Lately”, reached #8. The band’s sophomore effort, “2 Wave”, was released in 1988. It featured the singles “I Missed”, “Closer Than Friends” and “Can We spend Some Time.” The previously unreleased single “The First Time” appeared on the album “3 Deep”, which was released in 1991. The group disbanded in 1994. David Townsend died of unknown causes on October 26. 2005, at age 50.
