Midnight Star is an American funk/R&B band that rose to prominence in the 1980s. The group was formed in 1976 on the campus of Kentucky State University by Reggie Calloway (trumpet), Belinda Lipscomb (vocals), Melvin Gentry (guitar/drums/vocals), Kenneth Gant (bass), Bill Simmons (saxophone/keyboards), Bo Watson (keyboards/vocals) and Jeffrey Cooper (guitar/keyboards). They later added non-KSU student trombonist Vincent Calloway (Reggie’s younger brother). A 1978 showcase in New York City lead to the band being signed to Solar Records by CEO Dick Griffey. In 1980, they released their debut album “The Beginning.” In 1981, they released their sophomore effort “Standing Together.” “Victory” was released in 1982. In 1983, the band released their breakthrough album “No Parking On The Dance Floor.” The album’s first single, “Freak-A-Zoid”, reached No. 2 on the U.S. R&B Singles chart. The singles “Wet My Whistle” and “No Parking On The Dance Floor” also charted. The band also released the albums “Planetary Invasion” (1984), “Headlines” (1986), “Midnight Star” (1988), “Work It Out” (1990) and “15th Avenue” (2002).
