Charles Louis Brown, known professionally as Chuck Brown, was a American singer/songwriter/guitarist/band leader from Washington, DC. Brown garnered the honorific nickname “The Godfather Of Go Go”, a subgenre of funk music developed in and around the Washington metropolitan area in the 1970s. While it’s musical classifications, influences, and origins are debated, Brown is regarded as one of the fundamental forces behind the creation of go go music. Brown began his career in the 1960s playing guitar for Jerry Butler and The Earls of Rhythm before joining Los Latinos in 1965. At the time of his death, Brown was still performing and was well known in the Washington, DC area. His early hits include “We Need Some Money” and “Busing Loose.”
Brown died on May 16, 2012, of heart failure at age 75.
