Tina Turner Mural Defaced With Swasticka Sign

30 Monday Dec 2019

A mural in honor of legendary singer Tina Turner outside a North Carolina record store has been defaced with a red “swastika-type symbol.”

The Nazi symbol, drawn incorrectly, appeared earlier this week and was reported to police, according to a report from the Asheville Police Department.

Jesse McSwain, the owner of Static Age Records in downtown Asheville, told The Citizen-Times newspaper that someone unconnected to the store covered the music icon’s mural in a black sheet before he could address the situation. McSwain was quoted saying his store is “a widely inclusive, safe space” and that “hate speech will get you out the door.”

Another employee of the store, Arieh Samson, told CNN that his reaction to the incident was “a mix of deep disappointment and anger.” “Our record store isn’t just a record store,” said Samson. “It’s a community space that hosts events multiple times a week. It’s truly a safe and inclusive space for many aspects of the community.”

The record store is renowned for using its pulldown storefront to honor music legends, including Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Lemmy from Motorhead and Lou Reed.

Turner’s mural was based on her character in the film ‘Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.’

Following the release of the singles “Almost Over” and “Go Outside In The Rain”, which featured a companion music video, Xscape member Tamika Scott delivers her debut solo EP, “Family Affair.” The six song project features Scott’s polished vocals, soaring harmonies and emotional delivery. The EP was released via Scott’s label Brolic Entertainment in partnership with Twenty Two Recordings, LLC. Scott collaborated with Q Parker of 112 on “All Of Me” and  Young Niyah & Oshun on “Reflection.” Scott is a founding member of the female R&B quartet Xscape, which charted with such hits as “Just Kicking It”, “Understanding” and “Feels So Good” among others. R&B crooner Trevor Jackson unveiled a music video for the single “Tell You The Truth”, taken from his latest album, “Rough Drafts, Pt. 2.” In the clip, the heartthrob plays a psychotic lover, who goes off the hinges after discovering that his female companion is a two timing liar. In the end, he makes her watch as he ties up the other man, wields a knife, and leaves the rest to viewers’ imagination. Jackson released “Rough Drafts, Pt. 2” in June 2019. The project features special guest appearances by Diggy Simmons and Lil Yachty. He can be seen on the new Freedom show “Grown-ish” as Aaron Jackson, a classmate and love interest of Zoey Johnson. After crafting hits for Usher, Chris Brown, Summer Walker and others, songwriter Dimitri McDowell steps into the spotlight with his latest single, “Come On Time.” The track thrust the New York City native into the spotlight with soulful R&B melodies. On “Come On Time”, McDowell sings about finding love at just the right time. In addition to his work with Usher, Tinashe, Wiz Khalifa and others, McDowell also wrote “To My Bed” for Chris Brown, which appears on Brown’s “Heartbreak On A Full Moon” album. “Come On Time” is McDowell’s third solo release following his 2016 debut, “25 To Life.” The new single sets up a breakout 2020 for the rising star, which includes a forthcoming album. Fans can get updates on the singer on social media.

Kodack Black gave fans a surprise Christmas gift in the form of the single “Harriet Tubman”, which he released Wednesday. On the deeply personal single, he equates his upbringing to abolitionist Harriet Tubman running North to the Underground Railroad. The rapper released the track from prison, where he’s currently serving a 46-month sentence on a federal weapons charge stemming from his arrest last May before taking the stage at Rolling Loud Miami. Just days before the release of “Harriet Tubman”, Kodack donated money and gifts to Florida families. Listen to “Harriet Tubman” below.

This song is the property of Atlantic Records.
