The music industry is mourning the loss of singer James Purify who died at his Pensacola, Florida home of complications from COVID-19. He was 76. For those too young to recall, Purify was one half of the R&B duo James and Bobby Purify who rose to prominence in 1966 with what became their signature song “I’m Your Puppet.” The duo continued to have success throughout the decade with a cover of “Shake A Tail Feather”, along with “Let Love Come Between Us”, “Do Unto Me” and a dozen more singles. The hits dried up during the 1970s, and Bobby retired due to poor health. James Purify reformed the group with Ben Moore and toured, mostly oldies concerts, into the 1980s. James Purify will always be remembered as an important part of the Golden Era for soul music, and the co-creator of one of the classic soul songs of the 1960s. May he rest in peace.
