Kirby, the writer responsible for Beyonce’s “Die With You” and Rihanna’s “FourFiveSeconds”, steps into the spotlight with her latest single “Don’t Leave Your Girl.” “Don’t Leave Your Girl” is the followup to her previous single, “Koolaid”, taken from her forthcoming EP set for release in January 2020. Kirby blends neo-soul, contemporary R&B, and jazz while showcasing her soulful vocals and smooth harmonies. “Don’t Leave Your Girl” will make listeners travel back in time to classic R&B. Kirby brings the essence of Lauryn Hill mixed with the sultry aura of Amy Winehouse. She brings impeccable musical chemistry by perfectly blending rich harmonies and melodic production. The well-crafted single definitely conveys the essence of an experience that may be true for many women. The accompanying music video, directed by Thriced Cooked, is a soulful ballad fused with a modern cinematic production. The retro-themed clip begins with Kirby sitting in a garage when she suddenly attracts the attention of her doppelganger’s boyfriend. The story unfolds as Kirby proves to her scheming lover that she isn’t one to end a relationship. The bold aesthetic tied in with the red-yellow aesthetic color recalls the era of the 60s through the 80s. From the fuzzy dice on the rearview mirror to the “Koolaid” glass bottles, Kirby gives viewers everything vintage-retro. Throughout the clip, Kirby embraces natural hairstyles with the Afro-punzel hair and pigtail  puffs, giving fans black girl realness. Kirby began her songwriting career by writing a song a day on You Tube for 275 days. On day 302, she was signed to Roc Nation. She has worked with Demi Lovato, Paul McCartney, Kanye West and Ariana Grande. She debuted as a recording artist with the single “Loved By You”, a Southern-style ballad made with Jeff Gitelman. A second single, “Vain”, was released in 2017, followed two years later by “Koolaid.” The singer has described her music as a blend of soul and country. Fans should catch her in smaller venues before she starts selling out large arenas. She’ll perform her first show on February 12 in New York City. Kirby is a vocal powerhouse who will surely breakthrough in 2020.
