Sylvia Robinson was an American singer/musician/record producer/record label executive from Harlem, New York. Robinson had two chart toppers: “Love Is Strange” as half of Mickey & Sylvia in 1957 and “Pillow Talk” as a solo artist in 1973. She is remembered for her work as founder and CEO of the hip hop label Sugarhill Records. Robinson is credited as the driving force behind the singles “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang (1979) and “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five (1982), which caused her to be dubbed “The Mother Of Hip Hop.” Robinson received a Pioneer Award for her singing career and being the founder of Sugarhill Records at the 11th Annual Rhythm and Blues Gala in 2000. Sylvia Robinson died of congestive heart failure at Meadowlands Hospital in Secaucus, New Jersey at the age of 76. Robinson released the albums “Pillow Talk” (1973), “Sweet Stuff” (1975), “Sylvia” (1976), “Lay It On Me” (1977) and “Pillow Talk: The Sensuous Sounds Of Sylvia” (1996).
